INTERESTING ISLAND FACTS

1. Isle Madame was one of the first areas of Cape Breton to be inhabited by man (16th Century).

2. After the expulsion of the Acadians in 1755, large numbers of Acadians settled in coves near Petit de Grat.

3. During the War of Independence in 1775, American Privater John Paul Jones, destroyed a local fish plant.

4. In the early 1800's, Arichat was one of the busiest ports in the world.

5. St. Francis Xavier University was founded in Arichat in 1853, two years before it moved to it's present home in Antigonish.

6. Arichat Harbour is the 4th deepest harbour in the world.

7. The Catholic Church in Arichat is 30 years older than Canada itself.
