CULTURE

Because the majority of islanders are of French Acadian descent, the Acadian culture is of major importance to island residents.

Acadians first came to the island around 1755 to avoid their enemies after the Expulsion of the Acadians. Today, many families still live in the areas that were first settled by their ancestors.

Acadians celebrate their heritage every August with their Acadian Festival in Petit de Grat. This is a large and enjoyable festival attracting people from all across North America.

La Picasse, which is currently under construction in Petit de Grat, will be another means for both islanders and tourists to learn more about the Acadian Culture. Here, interested parties, could study the archives of Isle Madame, or perhaps take a course at La College de L'Acadie, a virtual college which will be housed on-site.
