Picture of Arichat Welcome sign

Isle Madame, situated at the southern tip of Cape Breton Island, is separated from Cape Breton by Lennox Passage on the north, Chedabucto Bay on the southwest, the Strait of Canso on the west and the Atlantic ocean on the east. We welcome you, to witness Isle Madame's picturesque beauty. Isle Madame is the first heritage region declared in Nova Scotia, the sixth declared heritage region in Canada; (Heritage Canada 1995).

Isle Madame began to flourish in the 1800's, when Arichat (Micmac word signifying split rock), established itself as a productive fishing port, hosting the world's deepest salt water port. The island bore homes to fishermen, boat builders, carpenters, blacksmiths... and more. Original documents on first settlers are always hard to find, but we know Acadians settled everywhere, as well as French, Basque and Portuguese fishermen who found ideal posts on Isle Madame.

Today, we continue to strive for what our ancestors believed in, no matter what culture they were from. We keep their spirit alive, through our festivals, our special events, our work, and our museums. So please, when you decide to drive by Cape Breton, come by beautiful Isle Madame, and witness it's history, feel it's power, and fall in love with it's beauty...
